a judge in steubenville, ohio found them guilty of raping a drunk 16-year-old girl and then celebrating her assault on social media. prosecutors say those postings first alerted the victim to what really happened while she was passed out. and they used that evidence to expose the privileged lives of sports stars in small towns. and the state's top prosecutor is calling for a gland jury to take another look at the case to make sure the whole truth has been exposed. cnn's poppy harlow has more for you. >> reporter: the mother of the 16-year-old victim spoke out for the first time since trents mays and ma'lik richmond raped her daughter saying this after court ended. >> it did not matter what school you went to, what city you lived in or what sports you've played. human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent. it is a god given gift instilled in all of us. you displayed not only a lack of this compassion, but a lack of any moral code. your decisions that night

affected countless lives including those dwaer up for you were your own accuser through the 10esh8 media that you chose to publish your criminal conduct on. this does not define who my daughter is. she will persevere, grow and move on. i have pity for you both. i hope you fear the lord, repent for your actions and pray hard for his forgiveness. >> reporter: the convicted rapists, both teenage boy, showing remorse after being found guilty. >> i would truly like to apologize to [ bleep ], her family, my family, the community. >> i would like to apologize to you, too. i had no intentions of doing anything like that, and i'm sorry to put you guys through this. i'd just like to -- i just want you it know that i'm sorry. >> reporter: the 16-year-old

girl was raped during a series of late night parties in august when she was drunk. >> the court is able to view the demeanor of the witnesses, judge their credibility, and weigh the evidence presented to the court. the court has done so in this case and it is the court's decision that both of the defendants are herebied y adju e adjudicated delinquent on all three counts. >> reporter: ma'lik richmond sentenced to a minimum of one year in a juvenile correction facility for rape. trent mays to a minimum of two years guilty of rape and of taking and distributing an illegal nude photograph of the victim. moth mays and richmond will also have to register as juvenile sex offenders. prosecutors said the girl was so intoxicated she wasn't capable of concesenting to anything. >> this case is about a

16-year-old girl who was taken advantage of, toyed with, and humiliated. and it's time that the people who did that to her are held responsible. >> reporter: eyewitness testimony from three teenaged boys, all friends of mays and richmond, and all granted immunity from criminal prosecution, was damaging. one witness saying he videotaped mays performing a sexual act on the girl during a car ride between parties. two others testified they saw richmond do the same later that night while she was lying naked on the floor. in a state of ohio, this act performed without concesent constitutes rape. >> there seems to be aun believable casual any about rape and about sex. it's a cavalier attitude. a belief that somehow there isn't anything wrong with any of this. >> reporter: text messages, tweets and photos were at the center of the trial.

fellow teens vulgarly joked about the rape. song of the night is definitely rape me by nirvana. >> what if that was your daughter? >> but it isn't. if that was my daughter, i wouldn't care. i'd just let her be dead. >> reporter: witnesses read text messages including this one from trent mays to a friend. yeah, dude, she was like a dead body. i sdwrus nejust need some had s attention. there was no jury. this was a bench trial with visiting judge thomas lipp sflt rendering the verdict because this was a juvenile case. >> and poppy harlow joins us live from steubenville. let's talk more about mike dewine, the ohio attorney general. what does he hope to find? >> well, he wants to make sure that as he put it yesterday in the press conference after this verdict came down here steubenville that every stone is overturned and nothing is left uncovered in this. the ohio attorney general's

office prosecuted it successfully. it is a concern because 16 people that they tried to interview in this investigation leading up to the trial refused to talk to them. so by convening this grand jury in mid april, they said indictments could be filed, charges could be made, or they may not. but they want to make sure they at least go through the process fully here in the community. in terms of what they're looking for, he wouldn't name specifically, but he did mention possibly tampering with evidence, you know, that cell phone video that was taken testified to being taken of the rape, that was deleted. so possibly tampering with evidence. other charges. he said there is no limit to what the ohio attorney general's office will look at in this, carol. >> not over yet. poppy harlow reporting live from steubenville, ohio today. we'll continue to follow this story all day. later this hour, i'll be talking about dr. jeff gardere as well as katie hannah of the ohio alliance to end sexual violence. and in the next hour of newsroom, we'll talk to the ohio

attorney general, mike dewine. other stories we're following this morning, morning classes have been canceled at the university of central florida after homemade bombs were discovered inside a dorm. the bombs along with an assault rifle were found after a man there committed suicide. we're still waiting to find out if the victim was a student. the explosives forced 500 students to be evacuated from their dorm last night. residents of an indiana neighborhood have not been will youed back home after a corporate jet slammed into several homes. the plane was carrying four people when it crashed into a row of homes in south bend last night. two people on board that plane were killed. three homes were damaged. the jet was circumstance link to land after failing the first time when it crashed, that's when those inside got out. >> my roof caved in, i grabbed my son and we ran out. >> 50 homes are still evacuated over concerns about gas leaks. all gas and electricity shut off

in the area. the tennessee national guard now helping crews fight a massive wildfire in the popular mountain resort city of pigeon forge. more than 30 cabins have already been damaged since the wildfires started sunday. so far about 150 people have been evacuated. just call it a makeover. gop style. the grand old party is ready to spend $10 million to rebrand, refocus and reach out to minority voters coast to coast. rnc chairman reince priebus focused on the problem his party needs to solve. here's part of what he had to say. >> there is no one reason we lost. our message was weak. or ground game was insufficient. we weren't inclusive. we were behind in both data and digital. and our primary and debate process needed improvement.

>> cnn's political director mark preston has just stepped out of the room where this announcement took place. so, mark, what else are you hearing? >> well, this is a major if not controversial step by republican party leaders. there certainly is acknowledge the within the republican party that they needed to do more to get younger voters, black voter, hispanic voter, asian american voters, women voters, just basically every type of voter besides white voters. but where it gets sticky and controversial is that they're talking about a more inclusive party, specifically being more tolerant to gay republicans which we have not seen in past years. this could be specifically controversial when you're talking about social conservatives who do have a lot of sway in the party. they're the ones that do put the boot on the ground. so while this report will be seen favorably by many in the republican party, there are also going to be those who are opposed. >> sarah palin was popular with the young crowds at cpac, that large conservative gathering

tennessee. now, that will be good news for those areas that are recovering from the wildfires that were burning yesterday, but for this afternoon, we do have a risk for severe storms anywhere from mississippi all the way up towards kentucky. could storms could produce large hail, damaging winds and can't rule out the possibility of an isolated tornado. so that's what you expect out of spring, right? but snow is still coming down through parts of the northern blaines. look what's happening there, a lot of snow heavy band moving through parts of minnesota. and with this combined with winds at 50 to 60 miles an hour, we are talking about a blizzard warning in place until 1:00 a.m. on tuesday. combine that with 4 to 8 inches of snowfall, this is not going to be pretty. across the mid-atlantic, still looking at some of that light snow departing out of the region of pennsylvania, but as we go through tonight, we will see more of that snow coming in and for areas including new england, we could see, get this, a foot or more of snowfall for areas like vermont, maine, as well as

of dictating what they think they should be doing. they should actually try to serve the liminority populationn this country. that's why the $10 million plan released this weekend is an ill conceived one because it's so much about getting the message out, not so much about listening to what people want from them. >> will. >> well, i do share some similar pessimism and the rope is how you set this up, carol. and that is how do you appeal or change your message to minority voters without professing something that's antithetical to your philosophy, which is minority voters largely accept a greater degree of government intervention than republicans can accept. that being said, i want to answer your question directly so i'll offer and you philosophical and policy example. on the philosophical level, you must communicate that the economic philosophy of republicans has caused a massive amount of wealth for everyone. and education is ripe if reform and republican principles are perfect for minority voters.

>> should i let you weigh in? >> i'm sorry. >> why are you laughing? >> you're laughing at education. expound upon your laughter on education. >> well, because its s's ridicus to try to think that the party who tried to get rid of the department of education is the one who wants to push education. it's ridiculous to think the tent that wanted to gut the teachers union want to push education. the party that wanted to take funding away from education is now the party in favor of education. that's reason i started laughing. >> those policieses worked well for you over the last 40 years. those schools that you're professing that teachers unions have a hold on on are doing really well. where school choice and charter schools that's what's doing well and voters across minority voters to voters of every

have to talk to i sandia. >> third question. sarah palin rocking cpac. doing everything from mocking new york city mayor michael bloomberg's big soda ban with a big sip from her big gulp to blasting the republican establishment. >> if these experts who keep losing elections, you keep getting rehired raking in millions, if they feel that strongly about who gets to run in this party, then they should buck up or stay in the truck. buck up and run. the architects can head on back to -- they can head on back to the great lone star state and put their name on some ballot. >> oh, that did not go over too well with karl rove, the man known as the architect of george w. bush's presidential campaigns. >> i appreciate her encouragement that i ought to go home to texas.

we want to take a closer look at the rape trial in steubenville. two football players convicted of raping a drunken teen age. the boys cried as they were sentenced to juvenile detention for at least a year. but the girl likely faces years of pain and torment. it was the crowning cruelty in a case that questions the actual

churs s cultures of social media and the idol worship of sports stars. katie hannah is the executive director of the ohio alliance to end sexual violence and in new york, jeff gardere who is a clinical and forensic psychologist. welcome to you both. jeff, there were many women over the weekend who witnessed these boys crying in the courtroom and their parents hugging them and they were appalled at that. it's like you're crying now only because you'll be incarcerated, only because you got caught. not because you were truly sorry. are they right? >> well, let's hope that these boys were truly sorry for what they did. it was a more risk crime and certainly a moral lesson for us all as to what friendship really should be about because at least knew her and when she had gotten so drunk, their job really was to appreciate her, no to the

abuse her, not to rape her, not to treat her like she was dirt. so let's hope that these tears were about recognition that what they did was horrible, they destroyed this girl's life, and they have to have some sort of emotional rehabilitation. >> i want you also to listen to a quote from the girl's mother. this is what accepted in court. human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent. it is a god-given gift instilled in all of us. you displayed not only a lack of this compassion, but a lack of any moral code. i mean, it's just astounding to me that these boys could abuse this girl practically all night, post nude pictures of her online, laugh about it with their friends. it's obvious at least on that night they had no moral code or compassion. is that something you're born with? >> you are. i truly believe we're all born

with some sort of moral compassion. but we also have to look at nature versus nurture. and area we had a town that has a football mentality where these players are treated as if they're demi gods and therefore they can get away with appalling an hafr. and then you have to look at the gang mentality that night. there were other teenagers involved who had gotten immunity who had taken pictures of her. so people were egging each other on towards this very inappropriate horrific and sexually violating behavior. >> katie, i want to read you something that the attorney general mike dewine said. he said rape is not a recreational activity. we as a society have an obligation to do more to educate our young people about rape. they need to know it is a horrible crime of violence and it's simply not okay. it seems sad to me that he thinks that we actually have to educate our young men about what rape is. >> yeah, and rape is a crime that happens in every community

every day all across the country, across ohio, across the world. and we have to remember how we got here. we got here because not only was she raped, she was objectified over social media. and she continues to be revictimized over social media. it wasn't her fault. we need to focus on the offenders and address the prevention issues. because victim blaming will never end vsexual violence. >> so what should parents tell their sons? >> parents need to teach -- i'm sorry, katie, go ahead. >> i think that parents need to have conversations with their teens about healthy relationships, about conconsent. and we need to echo that in schools. sitting in that courtroom and hearing teen after teen not do anything, there were so many people that could have intervened that night. and there were so many people that could have intervened after the fact over social media.

we have to support survivors because what happened in this case is why so many survivors don't come forward. she said herself that she was worried she was going to get blamed for what happened. and in order for us to be able to mauve forward and to heal, we need to believe survivors. >> jeff ghar deardere and katie hannah, thank you so much for the conversation.

cultures. social media and idol worship of high school sports stars. today trent mays and ma'lik richmond begin the first full day of serving sentences this juvenile detention. a judge found the teens guilty of raping a drunk 16-year-old girl. >> i would like to apologize to you. i had no intentions to do anything like that. i'm sorry to put you guys through this. i'd just like i just want you to realize that i'm sorry. i know i ruined her life, for life -- >> the prosecutors say the boys

and their friends celebrated the girl's assault on social media. they say the postings first alerted the victim to what really happened while she was passed out cold. here's what the girl's mother said to the boys after they were found guilty. >> human compassion is not taught by a teacher, a coach or a parent. it's a god given gift instilled in all of us. you displayed not only a lack of this compassion but a lock of any moral code. >> joining us now is the attorney general, mike dewayine. welcome. >> thank you. >> you're going to present this case to a grand jury. what do you hope will happen? >> well, i think the steubenville community needs two things. one is to get this over with. but the other is to believe that justice has been done, that we've left no stone unturned and that anyone who is criminally

liable has been brought to justice. what we will look at in the grand jury is really what happened in the aftermath of this. did anyone have any information that they should have reported to the police? in ohio, it's a crime to fail to report a felony if you know it has occurred. that will be certainly one of the things we'll be looking at. we've had a verytensive investigation looking at this. we had 16 people who refused to talk to us in that investigation. so we want to get this over with but we also want the community to believe that everything has come out that needs to come out and the truth has come out so we'll be convening a grand jury and trying to finish this up. >> the two boys were tried as juniles. one will spend two years in a juvenile detention facility and the other a year. in your mind, were those

sentences harsh enough? >> that's up to the judge. you know, my job as the prosecutor is to seek justice. i believe that justice was done yesterday. this is a very fine judge. i respect his opinion. >> i ask you that because you had strong words over the weekend. i'm going to read a bit about what you said after these sentences were handed down. you said rape is not a recreational activity. we as a society have an obligation to do more to educate our young people about rape. they need to know it's a horrible crime of violence and it simply is not okay. in this day in age, it seems impossible that you would have to teach young men what rape is. >> these young men, this was really what's referred to as digital penetration is what happened. they did not think it was rape. i think most of the people around them did not think it was rape.

you know, if we think that this is a steubenville, ohio, unique problem or unique to steubenville, we're dead wrong. that's one of the points i made yesterday. i'm afraid people are going to walk away say this is all about steubenville. it's not. it's a cultural problem. i guarantee you that there are crimes very similar to this that occur every friday night and every saturday night in communities across this country where you have people, young people particularly, who are drinking much too much and a girl is taken advantage of. a girl is raped. this happens all the time. so to me what's interesting is that there's been so much media attention on this case and that's fine, but our attention as a people and as a society and as parents and grandparents ought to be on what our bigger problem is. we have a societal problem about a lack of understanding of rape,

a lack of respect. it is very, very prevalent and it's a major problem. >> as a father and a grandfather -- i know you have a lot of kids and you have a lot of experience -- what do you tell your kids about what happened that night? what lessons do you teach your children about rape and what happened? >> well, i think it is about human decency as the victim's mother said. it's about morality. it's about doing what is right. one of the things that was so apparent is you look at this story and as we investigate what happened that night was that no one was looking out for this victim. really not her friends. certainly not the two individuals who raped her and one of them at least she thought was a friend. she thought that this one would protect her and instead of protecting her he took advantage

of her. no one was taking care of her. one of the lessons of life is we have to take care of each other. we have to try to help people and we have to do what's right and there are precious few people that night do were doing what was right. >> mike dewine, ohio attorney general, thank you so much for joining us this morning. >> thank you. >> let's head to south bend, indiana, where 43 homes are still evacuated near the site of a fatal plane crash. the corporate jet slammed into a row of single story homes yesterday killing two people aboard the plane and injuring the other two. remarkably there was only one minor injury on the ground. >> my roof is caved in. there was glass everywhere. the front of the house, windows busted out. i just grabbed my son and got him some clothes and we ran out. at this point i'm not worried about material things. i'm just glad my son and i made it out and we're alive.

>> cnn's jim spelman is in south bend. people still aren't allowed to go back home? >> reporter: it's going to be a little while before they are able to go back home. it's a really surreal scene here, carol. you can see firemen around the tail section of this plane right up against the house. you can see a damaged house. the blue one to the right. the ntsb and fire and police here in south bend all got together a couple hours ago to put together a plan to, one, have ntsb finish their investigation and two get the blane out of t plane out of the house and then open up this neighborhood to people over here on the other side of this field they are bringing heavy equipment in, backhoes and stuff. structural issues with the homes of course and one of the problems is the basement of the main house that has the plane in it is full of jet fuel in the basement. they have their hands full here.

what i'm really amazed at, carol, is that we know that two people in the plane died. the people in that home were able to walk away, the fire department here tells us. it's amazing. >> any cause of the crash yet? >> reporter: no. here's what we know happened. yesterday around 2:00 in the afternoon this plane had taken off from tulsa, oklahoma, was set to land at the airport which is really not far. it's just less than a mile in that direction. it said it had mechanical problems. attempted to land. pulled out. did not touch down. was circling around to try again and that's when it went down. obviously they will look at some sort of mechanical issue since they did radio in they were having problems. a week to ten days before we get initial assessment from ntsb could be a year before they come to a final conclusion. other top stories for you, morning classes have been canceled at the university of central florida after homemade bombs were discovered inside a dorm. the bombs along with an assault

rifle were found after a man committed suicide. we're waiting to find out if that victim was a student. the explosives forced 500 students to be evacuated from their dorms. a state of emergency declared in tennessee as the national guard helps crews fight a massive wildfire in the popular mountain resort city of pigeon forge. two helicopters being used to drop water on the flames. more than 30 cabins have already been damaged since the wildfire began on sunday. so far 150 people have been evacuated. and 2,500 dodge owners are being told to park their cars. the 2013 challenger v-6 is being recalled because the cars could catch fire. there's a short circuit problem that can cause a wire harness to overheat leading to a fire. it happened seven times already. owners are urged to stop driving and call their dealers. with the recent problems onboard several cruise ships, senator chuck schumer thinks it's time for a cruise ship

passenger bill of rights. his proposal follows the latest trouble with a carnival ship that came into port yesterday. they ran into problems with the propulsion system. >> reporter: there are two things that senator schumer is calling for. he says passengers have a right to backup power if power fails and they have a right to get off a ship. these are tied to problems with carnival cruise ships recently. for power for days. people hanging off the sides of the ship holding up signs saying get me off here. he says that cruise ships in large part are operating outside of the bounds of united states enforcement. they become the wild west of the travel industry and it's time to rein them in. it's a difficult thing. look at carnival. based in the u.s. but the ship

can be registered overseas and when it's in international waters, the laws are murky. there are guidelines in place about safety but schumer doesn't think that's enough. we've been here before with the airlines. who can forget jetblue's plane stuck on the tarmac in 2007. there was a passenger bill of rights that passed limiting how much time you can stuck on a plane. it took three years to get that legislation going. the bottom line is the cruise industry may be tougher to regulate and get that passenger bill of rights for the cruise industry. carol? >> we would like to end our first block of news this hour with david hasselhoff. the television actor and singer and now fighter for the berlin wall. hasselhoff was in germany joining other protesters in support of saving one of the last remaining sections of the berlin wall. he has rock star status in germany and as only hasselhoff can he used song to pump up the

here's part of what he had to say. >> it all goes back to what our moms used to tell us. it's not just what you say. it's how we say it. the promise of opportunity will be our message and a spirit of optimism will infuse everything that we do. >> cnn's political director mark preston was there for this morning's announcement. mark, how are republicans responding to priebus' remarks? >> reporter: that's the big question right now how will this report be taken throughout the republican party not only to centrist but the conservatives. the room behind me has cleared out. the report was issued. they'll spend $10 million to try to rebuild and rebrand the party. we're lucky that someone did stay behind. a south carolina republican. he's also one of the co-chairs of the growth and opportunity project, which is what this whole report is about. wondering if you can talk to me

a little bit about some of the things that came out in the report. you emphasized that the republican party has failed to do well with minority voters specifically african-american voters and hispanic voters, why have you failed and what are you going to do to move forward? >> the chairman laid it out. thanks, mark for having me. we really want to be big and bold and not only -- we don't just want outreach programs. we've done that. we parachuted in four months before an election and asked for votes. that's the wrong thing to do. we need to be in the community as the chairman said. it's a year-long activity. when you build relationships, you have to start with building mutual respect and rapport and then you build on that relationship where we can agree to disagree but we still can be friend. the party will invest as the chairman said this year in 2013, $10 million building out infrastructure not parachuting folks in again using that analogy from d.c. into

communities but we want to use folks within the state, within the communities that a grassroots activist that have relationships and that's why. the reason we failed awfully with people of color is because we haven't gone sustained relationships, building those sustained relationships in the community. we're not asking for folks to switch parties, to come to the republican party. we do hope we can have a dialogue. they can understand who we are. they can understand our candidates and some will support our candidates and we build upon that. >> another thing in the report that you emphasize heavily was the idea to be more inclusive. it seemed to be an olive branch to gay republicans and really it was noted in the report that young folks, young voters, tend to be more lenient when it comes to or more accepting of gay republicans. how is that going to be accepted by the more conservative wing of

your party? >> i hope it will be accepted because we're not saying we're changing our principles. we have to change our tone and the way in which we engage folks even young people, women, and show that we're caring, we're compassionate but most importantly we're sincere about that. and i think that we can all agree to disagree. as president reagan said, my 80% friend is not my 20% enemy. >> i think carol has questions as well. >> just one. as far as minority outreach especially to african-americans. glenn, thanks for being with us. the rhetoric by some in the republican party, for example, calling president obama a socialist, the whole birther movement and embrace of donald trump during the presidential election, doesn't that need to end if african-americans are going to feel welcome in the tent? >> you're absolutely correct, carol. we're not here to make excuses. you are absolutely correct that

tone matters. we've heard that throughout your listening sessions around the country with african-americans, with asians, with hispanic. we need to do a better job in communicating and controlling that tone and as a national party we'll do that. state parties will do that. and i think i'm excited about where we go from here. >> do you think that republicans will reject people like donald trump because he still embraces the birther issue. >> that gets back to reagan 11th commandment. we can agree on 80% of the things. he's not our 20% enemy. we need everyone. we have a big tent. we want to welcome everyone in. as a party we're the ones that should be leading and we should set that tone and we will do that in our activity. >> if donald trump said what he said today, the republican party would have said, like, can it donald trump. we don't want to hear that kind

of stuff? that would have happened? >> you can't control candidates. they have their own campaign. so we will leave it at that. as a national party we want to set the right tone as we engage communities as we work to build rapport and relationships and diverse communities. >> thanks so much. glenn mccall akaucalccall.

good morning. i'm carol costello. thank you so much for being with us this morning. a college campus mourns investigators are looking for clues into the crash of a team bus on the pennsylvania turnpike. the coach of the seton hill women's lacrosse team and the bus driver are dead. susan candiotti has more for you. >> reporter: two days after the crash, a mystery.

with no other vehicle involved, why would a bus driver swerve off the pennsylvania turnpike with 22 college athletes and coaches aboard? a sunday night service remembering victims of saturday's bus crash that killed both the driver and women's lacrosse team head coach christi christina who was six months pregnant. >> horrible for her husband. it's pretty hard. >> reporter: seton hill's campus near pittsburgh is stunned. the other 21 people aboard the bus survived with injuries including 19 players and two coaches. investigators are examining the team's charter bus for any possible mechanical problems. an autopsy is scheduled today on the 61-year-old bus driver for any medical explanations. >> everyone is devastated by the losses and it seems like we're all just coming together as a

school. >> reporter: authorities say there was a mix of snow and rain when the bus swerved off the pennsylvania turnpike, jumped a guard rail and went 70 yards before slamming head-on into a tree. the force peeling away the front left side of the bus. the death of the lacrosse coach is hitting the campus hard. >> everyone was saying did you guys here? did y did you guys hear? >> reporter: federal authorities say the bus company involved has a satisfactory safety rating. susan candiotti, cnn, new york. checking other top stories this morning. too old, too white, too insular to win national contests. that's just some of the findings from a new report released this morning by republicans. it follows the second straight loss in a presidential election. the 100-page report details hundreds of fixes including many to mend relationships with hispanic and african-americans.

torment. images and crude comments on her sexual assault were plastered all over the internet. it was crown in cruelty that questions the culture of social media and the idol worship of high school sports stars. last hour we heard from a clinical psychologist and also a rape crisis counselor. >> here we had a town that has a football mentality where these playe erers can get away with appalling behavior so something led up to this. you have to look at the gang mentality that night. there were other teenagers involved who had taken pictures of her so people were egging each other on toward this very inappropriate, horrific and sexually violating behavior. >> i want to read you something that the attorney general, mike dewine said. he said that rape is notrec ation rational activity. they need to know it is a

horrible crime of violence and it's not okay. it seems sad to me that he thinks that we actually have to educate our young men about what rape is. >> rape happens in every community every day across the country, across the world. we have to remember how we got here. we got here not only because she was raped but she was objectified over social media. it wasn't her fault. we need to really focus on the offenders and address prevention issues because victim blaming will never end sexual violence. we have to address this through prevention. >> what should parents tell their sons? >> parents need to teach -- i'm sorry. go ahead. >> parents need to have conversations with their teens about healthy relationships, about consent, and we also need to echo that in schools and football teams on the fields, peers need to be challenging

each other and talking about these issues. sitting in that courtroom and hearing teen after teen not do anything, there was so much people that could have intervened that night and so many people that could have intervened after the fact over social media. we have to support survivors. what happened in this case is why so many survivors don't come forward. she said herself that she was worried she was going to get blamed for what happened. and in order to us to be able to move forward and to heal, we need to believe survivors. >> ohio's attorney general is calling for a grand jury to take another look at the case to make sure the truth has been fully exposed. we'll be right back.

look, he's yesterday's news. he's not the candidate anymore. he himself has acknowledged there were a bunch of mistakes made by his campaign. he's not the one setting policy. he's not the one setting the tone for the republican party now. i think what we should talk about is what the rnc did today. they appointed some very no nonsense pragmatic people including our colleague ari fleischer from cnn and also sally bradshaw among them to take a hard, harsh honest look at everything we did wrong. it was a bunch of things. they've had where with all to admit it and put a plan together. it's a start. is it the magic formula? the silver bullet to start winning elections? no. it's more than ever done before. acceptance and acknowledgement of some of the very grave mistakes that were made and it's what the rnc can do. the rnc can't pass laws.

they don't craft policy. they do party building. i think what they're doing right now is very important and very refreshing and it's good for voting groups. i think the best thing that can happen to hispanic or african-americans or women or young people, any voting group in america is to have two strong healthy parties courting them and competing for their vote. >> and that's what i was going to put to you, robert. it's better for the country when we have two strong political parties. >> absolutely. >> right now only 31% of voters identify themselves as republican and that's a problem for all of us. some things that rnc suggested is that republicans embrace immigration reform because hispanic think you don't want us here. why should we listen to you any way? the other thing is they should put people in minority communities so that republican leaders can get to know these people so when things are said that aren't quite right, that

these republican leaders can go it those communities and say that's not how we all feel. those are good things, right? >> absolutely, carol. as you know i've been elected to the democratic national committee for 12 years. i'm a proud democrat. let me tell you, the country is stronger when we have a more viable republican party reaching the mainstream of america and in fact my party is stronger when we have a more viable republican party. i give ana a lot of credit. she's made great efforts as a republican leader by signing a statement recognizing marriage equality and helping to move her party in that direction. the problem though is that chairman priebus who made this effort to move the party forward can't do it just by messaging. it has to be by recognizing a fundamental need to change public policy. you can cut debates back from 20 to 10, you can change the calendar, if you have candidates engaging in the hateful divisive rhetoric we heard from people like herman cain and rick perry

and donald trump and others amongst others, it will isolate the republican party. the point simply is they are trying to get a facelift when this party needs an organ transplant. >> ana, i would like to ask you about that. i asked an official involved in this rnc study whether republicans would for example donald trump and his birther stuff. many thought that amounted to racism and white people think that way too. i asked him will people like donald trump no longer be welcome in the party and he said in essence, no. that doesn't mean that. should it? >> no. look, i cannot tell you just how stupid it was everything that donald trump said at his cpac speech last week was condensed 15 minutes of sheer stupidity i heard in a long time. that doesn't mean he or anybody else should be excluded from the

republican party. that's not how you build a big tent party. what we have to be is tolerant of each other. yeah, look, you know, i'm a big tent republican and i can tell you donald trump makes me take a deep breath and it tests my notion and my belief in a big tent republican party. but that's what being a big tent party is about. there's got to be room for people who are pro-traditional marriage and pro-gay marriage and room for people who are pro-immigration reform and not. there's got to be -- >> there's got to be zero tolerance -- >> there's got to be a zero tolerance for hatemongering and homophobia and that's the challenge for your party. you can't stop candidates from saying ugly, stupid things. what's intolerable is when you see congressional republican leadership tolerate it. look the other way when rush limbaugh engages in his behavior or try to excuse that kind of conduct. there has to be standards and that's critical to building the big tent picture you are talking
